LABYRINTH OF TIME
Open idea competition
2017

Beneath the man-made rock marker hides a city. Within 10,000 years it transforms through decay and erosion, revealing a master-plan. The boundaries of expendable spaces and the prohibited are constantly changing, returning the radioactive area to it's natural state as it ages. People who reside in this growing city pass on a message: ‘the rock should never be destroyed ahead of its time.' The 10,000 years mark the birth of the city as it reaches its final state, yet it is the end of the labyrinth. From construction to erosion, from prohibited to safe, the labyrinth is a physical limbo - an in-between state - a labyrinth of time.

The brief

The Rock

The Labyrinth designed is a monument of erosion and through its radionuclide half-life it reveals different forms according to its materiality and erosion rate. Constantly shifting its boundary, restricting access to the prohibited radioactive zones and unveiling expendable spaces through decay. As the land is returned, a new community emerges within, where a pre-planned city is slowly being revealed.

The Labyrinth

Passages are built throughout the entire area for it’s residents to travel and move around the revealing city. Each block of residential architecture is built in a size that can be accommodated into containers, which are then carried around through the city by using the built tracks - passages. Meaning property migration is possible, as more spaces are being revealed constantly. Other facilities will be placed into existing mass volumes which are unmovable pieces in order for the city to slowly expand.

The Myth

The marker has similar characteristics to a labyrinth, the myth of a possible danger; or a treasure that resides in it. It is a growing city that slowly reveals itself, this attraction of visitors will keep the marker alive - as the people that resides here passes on the message that the rock should never be destroyed ahead of its time.

Twist

There is a twist, the labyrinth protects the people and keeps them within the safe zone. Traditionally a maze serves to protect a treasure, here in the project the maze protects its people and the treasure is the final city being revealed after 10000 years.

The Beginning of the end

Only fully uncovered after 10000 years, it is when the city really becomes it’s own city.  The 10000 years marks the birth of the city as it reaches it’s final state, yet it is the end of the labyrinth. From built to eroded, from prohibited to safe, the labyrinth is a physical limbo - an in between state - a labyrinth of time.
